Lions Raffle Now Under Way

The Kingston Lions Club members are selling raffle tickets as their major fund raised this year. The raffle is for a $2,500 vacation trip or cruise at the winner's choice. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. See any Kingston Lions member for tickets or email kingstonlionsclub@gmail.com and we will send them to you. Drawing is on April 3, 2012.

Club Donates $500 to the Catskill Ballet

At the Club's weekly luncheon on December 27, club president John Burlingham presented to the Catskill Ballet a check for $500 from the Kingston Lions Foundation to help the Ballet make new costumes for their 30th anniversary they are celebrating in 2012.
The Catskill Ballet is mostly known for its annual production of the Nutcracker held at the Community Theatre(UPAC) in December of each year. The Catskill Ballet works with children teaching them the techniques of ballet and offering them a venue to showcase their talents.

Annual Dinner for Disadvantaged

On Tuesday, November 22, the Kingston Lions Club hosted a free roast beef dinner at the VFW Hall on East Chester St. By-Pass in Kingston for over 270 people. Guests were served by 17 Kingston Lions members and their families.
Special thanks go to Rondout Savings Bank and Ulster Savings Bank for providing major funding for this event. Chair of the dinner was Cheryl Bowers of Rondout Savings with special help from Mary Rose Warcholak from Ulster Savings.
For over 30 years the Kingston Lions Club has been hosting this dinner. The Kingston Lions Club band the Roar’n Pride provided entertainment.

Lions Helps Flood Victum

Kingston Lions helps a Phoenicia woman who lost everything in Hurricane Irene. Recently the Kingston Lions Club and the Lions District 20-O helped Dorothy Rotella begin to get her home reestablished. Kingston Lion Hildy Meissner assist Ms. Rotella in selecting household items. Ms. Rotella's home was flooded out and she is now living with her Mother-in-Law temporarily until she finds another place to live. The Kingston Club along with District 20-O made her life a little easier by covering the cost of some household items at a local discount store.

Youth Outreach Donates $700

Kevin Gilfeather announces that the Kingston Lions Club has supported Kingston Babe Ruth League with a sign at Herzog's field for $300. The club also purchased a sign for $300 at the Kiersted Ave. Little League Field. Also the club donated $100 to the Kingston Y for a scholarship at Camp Seewackamano. The Kingston Lions continues to support the community.

Kingston City Clean-Up

Kingston Lions members helped in the citywide cleanup for Kingston on April 30th. Six Lions, John Burlingham, Pres., Joe Thurin, Walter Maxwell, Tom Keehn, Dorry Dabney and Kevin Gilfeather worked on the City Entrance at Washington Avenue, Hurley Ave and Schwenk Drive for two hours sweeping sidewalks and picking up trash. Lions at work making their community better.

For two days, March 19 & 20, at the Hudson Valley Mall the Kingston Lions Club presented its 64th Annual EXPO. Over 48 exhibitors where at the show presenting their products and services to interested attendees and shoppers. All money raised will go back to the community for various services the Kingston Lions Club supports including Youth Activities, Diabetes Awareness, Sight and Hearing Services and Community Improvement.

The winner of the GRAND PRIZE of a $2,000 shopping spree at the Hudson Valley Mall was Dave Giustiniani of Lake Katrine.
Second, Third and Fourth place raffle winners of a $1,000 shopping spree at the Hudson Valley Mall were Pat Reynolds from Lake Katrine, Bobbie Hahn from Kingston and Edward Blodgett from Canaan, NY.

Lions Donate $2,000 to WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund

Lion members Kevin Gilfeather, Dorry Dabney, Tom Keehn and Pres. John Burlingham take to the WGHQ microphones at Boice Bros. Dairy Milk House on Thursday, Nov. 4th, to raise money for the WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund. Not only did the members raise money from the public for the Fund they presented a check of $2,000 from the Kingston Club to the Fund. Over $26,600 was raised that day.
The WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund is in its 43rd year of raising money for needy families. Donations can be sent to the WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund, 82 John St., Kingston, NY 12401.

Yard Sale A Success!!!

On Saturday, Oct 9, the Kingston Lions Club and the Sunrise Rotary hosted a joint yard sale at Allways Moving. The Lions grossed $549.80. Our expenses were $53.50 for classified ads in the Freeman and the Kingston Times. Rotary picked up the cost of the dumpster for $57.20. Net profit to the club is $496.80. Thanks to all for their help in making this event a success.

The Lions Club of Kingston was a gold level sponsor, donating and presenting a $1000 check from the Club and the Diabetes Awareness Committee at the 2010 Annual JDRF - “Walk for the Cure” event held at Tech City on Sunday, September 12^th. The Kingston Walk generated $70,000 to go towards research and finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

The Lions Club of Kingston has been a sponsor for this annual event for the past 21 years, contributing over $21,000 to help find the cure.

On June 29^th the Kingston Lions Club installed new officers for the coming fiscal year 2010-2011. Installed for President was John Burlingham. As vice presidents Dan Terpening and Walter Maxwell were installed. Secretary Richard Sturrmer was re-elected to another term of office as was Treasurer Laurie Kelley.

During the last year the Kingston Lions club and its Foundation donated over $11,600 to area charities. President Burlingham urged members to work hard in this economy so the Lions Club can help those who need the support in this economic times.

The Kingston Lions Club Foundation presents a check for $2,000 to the YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County for their Capital Campaign. The Foundation donation will go towards the purchase of a pool chair lift and ramp.

After a short illness Dr. Lew died last Tuesday, 9/29/09(see complete obit at http://simpsongaus.com/). MagicLew was a lion for 47 years and worked hard. He went through all the "chairs" in the club. One of the originators of our band The Roar'n Pride. He will be missed.

Foundation awards $1,500.00 in Grants

At a recent meeting of the Kingston Lions Club Foundation grants totaling $1,500 were awarded to the Lions Eye Institute of Albany and the American Red Cross of Ulster County.
The Lions Eye Institute received $1,000.00 towards the purchase of a IOL Master used to measure eyes during cataract surgery. The total cost of this machine is $27,453.
The second grant was made to the Red Cross in the amount of $500.00 for training materials for the instruction of CPR, first aid and water safety.

New presidents Dorry Dabney - Kingston and Andy LaBarge - Ulster were sworn in by Lions Region Chair Hildy Meissner. Notable recognition was made to out going Kingston president Nancy Rafter who received the Robert Teetsel Lion of the Year Award. Kingston Lions Treasurer, Joe Thurin, received the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award.

Benedictine Hospital Foundation Receives Grant

Past President Cheryl Alger passed away 4/29

Sadly, our past president, Cheryl A. Alger of Arlmont St., Kingston died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at her home.

Surviving are her husband of 15 years, Sean M. Alger; her mother Josephine Frolich Roeber of Kingston; three brothers Philip Roeber of Albany, Gary Roeber of Kingston and Paul Roeber of Lake Katrine; two sisters Vicky Gore of Lake Katrine and Michelle Roeber of California; many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours, a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church and interment will be announced by Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home.

A member and Past President of the Kingston Lions Club, she chaired a successful Expo at the Hudson Valley Mall. She also served on the Kingston Lions Foundation Board.

Foundation awards $3,500 in Grants

At the March Foundation meeting the Board granted the Benedictine Hospital $2,000 towards the purchase of a Carescape V100 Monitor for the hospital medical/surgical unit for the portable monitoring of patient's vital statistics.
The Friends of the Forsyth Nature Center received a grant of $1,000 for a generator to keep animals warm in the case of a power failure.
Lyrics from the Heart received a matching grant from the Foundation in the amount of $500 to match the Saugerties Lions Club's donation of $500.

On Tuesday, Feb 3, the Kingston Lions Foundation held its annual meeting at the Holiday Inn during the club's regular luncheon meeting. Elected to the Foundation board of Directors for a three year term were Joe Thurin, Dorry Dabney and Ed Levine. Officers for the coming year are President Kevin Gilfeather, VP Dorry Dabney, Secretary Walter Maxwell and Treasurer Joe Thurin. During 2008 the Foundation distributed $6,000 in grants.

Lions purchase gifts for needy families

Over the weekend of December 6 & 7 members of the Kingston Lions club took 51 needy families through Wal-Mart to pick out gifts for their children. Over 116 children received gifts. The club picked up the cost of this "visit" to Wal-Mart in the amount of $4,175.

On Tuesday, Nov 25th, the Kingston Lions club held their annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the handicapped at St. Mary's Hall in Kingston. Over 200 were in attendance. Music was provided by the Lions Club Band and the guest speaker was Ulster County's new County Executive, Mike Hein. Lions members cooked the food and served our guests. Also helping with the serving were Lions family members. Head chef was Lion Lew Kirschner and was assisted by Lion Laurence Maxwell.
It was estimated that this event has been going on for some 35+ years.

Foundation Gives $3,000 to Kingston Hospital

Kingston Lions Foundation President Kevin Gilfeather and Lion member Dorry Dabney receive recognition from the Kingston Hospital Foundation for the Lions gift of a MRI compatible gurney. The Kingston Lions Foundation donated $3,000 for a non-magnetic gurney.

At the 2008 Walk to Cure Diabetes on September 21, 2008 the Kingston Lions Club donated $1,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This annual event has been strongly supported by the Kingston club for a number of years.

Donations are now up to $511 to the Kingston Lions Foundation in memory of recently departed Lion member Bob Gruberg. Donations came from Lions members and the general public to support the work of the Lions Foundation. On Friday, Sept. 19, long time Lion member Bob Gruberg died in Kingston Hospital. Bob will be remembered for his tireless efforts on behalf of our Club and in our band, the Roar'n Pride. Bob's family has asked that donations be sent in his remembrance to Ahaveth Isreal, PO Box 3063, Kingston, NY 12402 or the Kingston Lions Club Foundation, PO Box 3433, Kingston, NY 12402. Lions Help Sponsor Photo Exhibit

On August 14th from 3pm to 5pm there will be an opening reception of a photo exhibit "KINGSTON IN BLOOM" at the Visitors' Center on the Strand in Downtown Kingston from 3pm to 5pm. Here is a chance to see photographs of the many gardens in Kingston. This exhibit will run for 30 days. The exhibit is also sponsored by the Little Garden Club of Kingston.

Lion John Macaluso is selling discount cards to Macy's for a giant sale on 9/20. This is a national day of support for local non-profits and the Kingston Lions Club is participating. The discount cards are selling for $5.00 and give holders discounts of 10% - 20% on top of other sale prices that day. Check with John at 845-340-8543 to get your card. Proceeds from the card sale go to the Kingston Lions Club.

$3,500 in Scholarships Awarded

At a recent meeting of the Kingston Lions Scholarship Committee $3,500 was awarded to local students.

Dasha Miller and Nadine Cafasso from SUNYulster each received $1,000
Bradley Umble and Taylor Jordan from Kingston High School each received $500
Elisabeth Reer attending Our Lady of Lourdes High School received $500

$500 for Babysitting Basics, CPR & First Aid Training.

The Kingston Lions Youth Outreach committee presented the Rose Women's Care Service at the Everette Hodge Community Center with $500 for the training of six young ladies in babysitting basics, CPR and first aid. This training will help the young women in obtaining part-time work over the summer and will last them a lifetime. The instructors were Marge Gagnon and Linda Showers. Everette Hodge was a long time lion member and was a great community leader.

Kingston Lions support Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts

Members of Girl Scout Troop 197 and Cub Scout Pack 135 joined together Saturday, May 10th at the Plattekill Reformed Church to repackage playing cards donated by the Kingston Lions Club. The cards were the result of a successful Las Vegas Night held earlier this year. As the children worked with their parents to return the cards to individual packs, they elected to send the repackaged cards to servicemen and women overseas. The playing cards will be added to the multiple cookie boxes ready to be shipped. Members from these two Girl and Boy Scout units included: Wendy and Rebecca Brett, Bailey Young, Michael and Brandon Rizzo, Bridget Malderelli, Krista Barringer, and Renata, Garrett, Thane, and Ross Simera. 48 decks of cards with five different card designs were sorted and repacked within two hours.

Foundation gives $3,000 to Camp Badger

At its regular meeting the Kingston Lions Foundation gave the Empire State Speech & Hearing Clinic $3,000 to help purchase a wheel chair transportation vehicle for Camp Badger. With this vehicle more kids can attend camp who have limited mobility problems.

For two days, March 29 & 30, at the Hudson Valley Mall the Kingston Lions Club presented its 61st Annual EXPO. Over 60 exhibitors were at the show presenting their products and services to interested attendees and shoppers.

Kingston Lions Band make the Front Page

A picture of our band made the front page of the March 2008 edition of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce Newsletter which is distributed to 10's of thousands in the Kingston Daily Freeman and through the mail. The band will be playing again this year at the 39th Irish person of the year breakfast at the Kingston Holiday Inn on March 17th. PDG Lettie Saheim, Treasurer of the Lions Eye Institute Foundation in Albany, presents a "Knights of the Blind" plaque to the Kingston Lions Club Foundation in recognition of their gift to the Lions Eye Institute. Representing the Kingston Club are Foundation President Kevin Gilfeather and Club President Nancy Rafter. Over the years the Kingston Club and Foundation has supported efforts of the Lions Eye Institute to bring better eye care and training to patients and doctors.

Kingston Lions Donate $4,840 to needy families

Kevin Gilfeather, chair of the Youth Outreach Committee, and several Lions shopped with needy families for Christmas gifts at Wal-Mart on December 2 & 9. Sixty families with 129 children were shopped for. Both Lions members and families had a wonderful time during this event.

Kingston Lions host a Christmas party for 15 clubs

60 plus Lions came together in fellowship to celebrate the Holiday spirit at the Hillside Manor in Kingston last Friday, November 30^th. Dancing to the music of the Kingston Lions Roar 'n Pride provided a wonderful setting for the clubs to get together. Participating clubs included the Town of Ulster, Catskill, Town of Esopus, Rondout Valley, Kerhonkson, Hudson, Marlboro/Milton, New Paltz, Le Grange, Town of Newburgh, Town of Dover, Monroe, Rhinebeck. and Amenia. One guest Lion came all the way Upstate Adams.

Our Vice District Governor Melanie Wargo won the "Pot of Gold' 50-50 plus several other prizes. Dinner chair Lion Hildy Meissner was pleased withall dancing and tapping of feet to the music. Hildy said, “ It all ended too soon with us all wishing everyone HAPPY HOLIDAYS.”

Kingston Lions Club Band in Action

See a video the Roar'n Pride in action at the enclosed link. The Lions Club band was a big part of the WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund concert at the Hudson Valley Mall yesterday, Dec 1st. The Fund raised $247.30 from over 1,000 people who stopped by the concert from 11am to 3pm. Besides the Lions Band there were the Pointe of Praise-Praise Team, Mount St. Alphonsus choir and the bell ringers from Redeemer Lutheran church. A great concert and a fun time for all.

Kingston Lions Foundation Grant to Benedictine Hospital

Kevin Gilfeather, President of the Kingston Lions Foundation, presents a check for $4,320 to purchase a Masimo Corporation SPCO/SPO2 monitor for Benedictine Hospital’s Emergency Department. This monitor provides medical personnel with important information on carbon dioxide levels in the patient. The reading is taken by placing a probe on a finger. Levels above or below acceptable readings can indicate a decreased ability to exchange oxygen in the blood stream due to conditions such as pneumonia, lung disease, or smoke inhalation. Evaluating a potential health problem early can be used to then address an appropriate treatment for the patient and improve outcomes. As a part of vital signs, this monitor will be used on all patients in the Emergency Room. With close to 25,000 ER visits to Benedictine Hospital in 2006, the impact this one piece of equipment can have will be tremendous.

JoAnn Hickman tells me that the Kingston Lions Club Band, The Roar'n Pride, will be mentioned in the Hudson Valley Mall insert on the Ulster Publishing papers this Thursday, 11/29. The papers include the Kingston Times, Woodstock Times and Saugerties Times. The band is mentioned as to their participation in the WGHQ Happy Christmas Fund Concert on December 1st.
In past editions of the Sunday Freeman the same ad also appeared with the band's participation.
